Wavey Nights: a recap by Milli-Rose

What happened on the 17th July?

On Monday 17th of July 2023, Wired4Music put on an incredible open jam night called ‘Wavey Nights’, at Rich Mix in East London. Wired4Music provides paid opportunities for young people, encouraging them to try things that they may have never tried before. Wired4Music’s Programme Producer Tee Peters, has continuously applied his own musical knowledge and experiences to help young emerging artists. Whether this is working behind the stage, or taking the mic on stage, there is a role for everybody. With the support of Sound Connections and our funding bodies, we are able to continue putting ideas to paper, and then delivering them into action.

So what was the jam like?

The jam was an incredible opportunity for young people to come and perform with a live band. At times, freestyle can be unknown territory, however Wired4Music members continue to build a community that is safe and encouraging.

The setting for the night was inviting and warm, with rugs to sit on near the stage. Before the show started, there was a great chance for creatives to meet new people and network. Music is and always will be a great way to connect people, and learn something new. We had a list of open mic acts that came and shared their work, followed by a collective band who adapted to each freestyle genre in the moment. We experienced such a range of talent as each act took the stage, from poetry, to music and more.

The host Nomadic Libaax, a long-standing member of Wired4music, kept the vibes high with his energy. The jam section of the night was a space where anyone could go up at any time and freestyle. Young people from different walks of life and different genres of performance, came and graced the stage. The variety was incredible, and the band adapted to each style amazingly. We had The Metaphorest capturing moments and filming the night throughout, and Wired4Music members capturing content for social media too.

The process

Wavey nights was curated by 5 young people from Wired4Music, and a producer behind the scenes. There is a lot of work that takes place prior to an event like this. Wired4Music introduced new and innovative ways of marketing this event. In our digital age, which is constantly evolving, it is important that we collectively discuss new ways of “getting the message out there”. Wired4Music members would meet weekly via zoom or in real life, to put their ideas into action. Through social media posts, reels and word of mouth, the message began to spread. It is important to also highlight that not everybody has digital access to see posts and opportunities that are promoted online. Our producers also put up physical fliers about Wavey Nights, for people to see in different places around Shoreditch, and within Rich Mix itself.

How can I get involved?

Wired4Music is a creative community supporting young emerging artists aged 16-25 in London. We provide paid opportunities for young people to gain experience in different areas of their own interest. Whether it is social media, events, performing or networking, Wired4Music is a space for just that. We hold regular drop-in sessions for our community, and our 1:1 Careers Advice Sessions, where Tee Peters or another member of the team, will help support you in your creative endeavours.
