Every month we’re celebrating a different W4M member! This month we’re celebrating Akua!

How did you get started in music?

I breathe, eat, and drink music – I can’t imagine what life would be like without it. From a very young age I knew that I wanted to sing. I started in the church choir when I was 8 years old, and it’s really been a musical venture ever since. From being in choirs, to auditioning for labels and then finally deciding to be independent and go solo, it has really been a journey.

Who are your inspirations:

Family is really important to me and I would say that my grandma was my BIGGEST inspiration; I’m named after her. She was ‘Akua Dedewa’ (hence my name Akua). It’s also a Ghanaian name given to a female born on Wednesday. I am inspired by her journey and she always wanted me to pursue a career in music as she never had the chance to. My mum and brother are also two big inspirations, they always push me to keep going and have been encouraging me right from the start!

Musically, I can always say that Beyoncé has been one of my favourite’s right from the very beginning. Not just her sound, but her stage presence, the way she puts on a show and always gives 110%. I’ve always been inspired by her drive and her attention to every single detail – that’s what makes her stand out. She uses her platform to educate and empower people, and that’s one thing I really admire about her.

Where’s the most interesting place you’ve made music:

Making music back home in Ghana was a really interesting. The whole experience being back home and recording was new to me. I felt like I was in my element. The whole creative process was different, I had a lot more creative freedom and control to express myself. I definitely want to go back and record some more music!

Top tips for any younger musicians reading:

Don’t give up on your dream. There will be days when you feel worn out, discouraged and sometimes you’ll question everything. “Why am I even doing this?”, “It’s not worth it, no-one supports me.”

We’ve all been there but your dream will ALWAYS be worth it! No matter what happens or what others say, keep the fire burning. Don’t let your circumstances move you away from your passion – it’s the only thing that will keep you going. You never know who is watching you. It’s all a part of your journey. Let this be your motivation and word of encouragement to keep striving, pushing and working hard. At the right time everything will fall in to place.
