“ As a composer, I acquired knowledge and skills, boosted my confidence and met many fantastic people” (Summer School student)

The Sound and Music Summer School is a unique, week-long residential that gives 75 students aged 14 – 18 the opportunity to explore and develop their musical creativity.  Whether they’re into song-writing or jazz, film music or classical, this is their chance to take things to the next level.

Led by some of the UK’s leading composers and educators, the week is held in partnership with The Purcell School and takes advantage of their specialist music and residential facilities. This year’s tutor groupss are led by Issie Barratt (Artistic Director National Youth Jazz Collective, Parliamentary Award for Jazz Education 2014); Laura Bowler (Royal Northern College of Music, Artistic Director Size Zero Opera); Alison Cox (Head of Composition, Purcell School); Aidan Goetzee (Head of Music Technology, Purcell School); David Horne (Royal Northern College of Music; BBC Proms commission 2014).

Full of collaboration, fun, learning and creativity, students will:

  • Explore different styles and methods of composing and music-making
  • Meet and work with leading composers and musicians
  • Create their own piece of music working within one of the five specialist tutor groups
  • Have their music performed and recorded by professional musicians
  • Work alongside and socialise with other young composers
  • Have the option to gain an Arts Award (Bronze)

“It’s literally the best thing I’ve ever done” (Summer School student)

Deadline for applications: noon Monday 6 April

Summer School dates: 2 – 8 August

Held at The Purcell School, Bushey, Hertfordshire

Sound and Music does not wish anyone to be put off by the cost of the week, which is set at £500 including all tuition, accommodation and activities. This is already a highly subsidised amount and we are able to offer fee reductions and waivers for students from lower income families. We will always be open to discussing individuals’ financial situations and are determined that everyone who is accepted on the course should be able to attend regardless of their family’s circumstances.
