On the second Sunday of every month Grand Union runs a workshop for young musicians between 12 and 26 in different types of world music traditions, as well as jazz and improvisation.
The Grand Union Youth Orchestra (GUYO), formed in 2007, is London’s pioneering world music and jazz youth ensemble.
Led by professional jazz and world-musicians from the renowned Grand Union Orchestra, GUYO run free monthly workshops for young musicians aged 12 to 26 from a diverse range of cultures.
This unique ensemble offers members the opportunity to:
– Take part in high-profile performances
– Work alongside leading professional musicians
– Learn about world music, first hand, from experts
– Discover new instruments and develop improvisation skills
– Meet and create with like-minded young musicians
They blend Indian ragas, Turkish folk tunes, West African chant and drumming with salsa, calypso, reggae and blues. GUYO members perform regularly around in London at original shows as well as at festivals all over the capital.
