Jazz re:freshed Film Club presents: The Fender Rhodes Story with a short, live improvised post show solo Rhodes performance from Joe Armon-Jones
The Fender Rhodes story is a historical tribute to the electric piano that changed the sound of music. Invented by Harold Rhodes as a rehabilitation tool for soldiers in World War II, the Fender Rhodes piano both revolutionized and empowered musicians to explore a new, electric frontier of music. Through interviews with a remarkable cast of music notables, this film takes an insider’s look into how this electric piano played – and continues to play – an integral role in the creation of a wealth of music, from the 1960s through today and provides a rare glimpse at the music history behind some of the most memorable music of our time.
One of the leading lights of UK’s bright burning jazz movement, Joe Armon-Jones released his debut album “Starting Today” in May 2018, on Brownswood’s label. As well as being a founding member of Ezra Collective, he has performed with a wide range of artists and is a regular fixture in the bands of Nubya Garcia & Mr Jukes. Following 2017’s “Idiom”, a project with producer Maxwell Owin, Joe contributed to Brownwood’s We Out Here project with the track “Go See” in February 18.
