Fairbeats! delivers music education projects for young refugees and asylum seekers in Lewisham and Kingston. Having received Youth Music funding for 2013-15, we are moving into our third year delivering music-making activities at Action For Refugees In Lewisham (AFRIL) and Refugee Action Kingston.
Each year we offer the opportunity for a trainee leader to join our team and work alongside us in delivering music sessions for the young refugees at AFRIL’s Rainbow Club. Working creatively with Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 participants, activities include singing, rhythm, musicianship, basic theory and instrumental lessons. Each session also involves some planning and evaluation time, and there are performances throughout the year. The trainee will assist with the Early Years, KS1 and KS2 group music sessions (Saturdays 11.30am-1pm), and will contribute to performances.
The ideal candidate doesn’t need to have extensive education experience, but will be a highly competent musician with keyboard skills and be able to demonstrate a strong desire to lead group music-making and work with children in challenging circumstances. In particular, they will have a genuine interest in, and commitment to, working with refugees.
The skills and qualities we’re looking for
Some music workshop leading experience, which can include as an assistant leader
Keyboard skills
Proactive approach to planning and leading activities
Commitment to working with refugees and the desire to work in a challenging environment
Available for the dates listed below, including a training and induction day
Desirable skills
Songwriting/song arranging skills
Holder of a current enhanced disclosure CRB (dated within the last 12 months)
Role details
The sessions take place on Saturdays, beginning in September 2013 (specific dates TBC) and the trainee will work with the Early Years, KS1 and KS2 group music sessions, 11.30am-1pm each week. They will also be required to attend an induction meeting in September and termly training workshops. Sessions take place at The Leemore Community Hub, Bonfield Road, Lewisham SE13 5ES.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a CRB check.
Remuneration
£20 for each 1.5-hour session In addition, the trainee will have the following opportunities:
Potential additional paid work (such as supporting holiday music-making).
The opportunity to oversee a funded holiday project upon completing the traineeship.
Relevant training (past training has included with Sound Connections and the Refugee Council).
