Fairbeats! delivers music education projects for young refugees and asylum seekers in Lewisham and Kingston. Having received Youth Music funding for 2013-15, we are moving into our third year delivering music-making activities at Action For Refugees In Lewisham (AFRIL) and Refugee Action Kingston.
We are currently recruiting a student volunteer to support group instrumental sessions with young people aged 7-11 who attend the Saturday Rainbow Club at AFRIL. They will join the team of around 15 volunteers who support Rainbow Club staff each week.
More information and a film about our work can be found at www.fairbeats.co.uk.
What we’re looking for:
Availability on Saturdays 11.30 – 1 pm for one term during the 2013-14 academic year (or, alternatively, we would consider working with two students for half a term each).
A desire to develop skills in workshop leading.
An interest in working with young people, particularly young refugees and
asylum seekers.
Enthusiasm and a proactive approach.
A confident musician (we are particularly interested in hearing from
guitar/ukulele/flute/fife specialists but as this position is a supporting role would be happy to hear from musicians with any instrumental or vocal specialism).
Responsibilities include:
Supporting Fairbeats! leaders during group ukulele and fife sessions.
Leading short sections of the classes where appropriate.
Collecting students to ensure smooth transitions between classes.
Supporting individual participants to engage with activities.
Assisting with performances.
Setting up resources.
Role details:
The sessions take place on Saturdays, beginning in September 2013 (specific dates TBC) and the trainee will work with KS2 fife and ukulele group instrument lessons, 11.30am- 1pm each week. They will also be required to attend an induction meeting in September and termly training workshops. Sessions take place at The Leemore Community Hub, Bonfield Road, Lewisham SE13 5ES.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake a CRB check.
What we offer you:
Travel expenses within London zones 1-6.
Training opportunities and mentoring support from Fairbeats! leaders.
The potential to use the experience as part of a school/college/university
project, with support from Fairbeats! leaders where appropriate and feasible.
Although this cannot be guaranteed, previous volunteers with Fairbeats! have
gone on to gain paid positions including supporting sessions at Refugee Action Kingston during the holidays and leading parents and baby classes at Action for Refugees in Lewisham.
To register your interest, please email Jennifer Raven at fairbeats@gmail.com. Please include a CV and a paragraph about why you’d like to be involved by 5pm on Monday 15 July 2013.
