Spring 2020 Free Masterclasses with Professional World Jazz Musicians from Grand Union Orchestra

For over 30 years, Grand Union Orchestraand its established youth programme, has been the acknowledged pioneer of cross-cultural music-making in the UK and continues to reach out to curious audiences and young musicians to come together through music.

Many Grand Union musicians are first generation migrants from the major global musical traditions –  including North, South and Central Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia, Eastern Europe, China and Western Jazz.

They create a special musical alchemy, which vividly reflects the rich diversity of today’s society and often takes as its starting point traditional rhythms, melodies and themes of migrant communities, their journeys and human stories.

Grand Union’s Youth Orchestra (GUYO), now in its 12th year, brings together young musicians aged 12-26, under the guidance of GUO’s professionals. Together, in this inter-generational exploration of  the musical traditions flourishing in contemporary East London, they work towards regular public performances.

In Spring 2020 GUYO masterclasses focus on the music of South Asia, South Africa and the Carribean, led by virtuoso musicians from these cultural backgrounds. All masterclasses take place at Rich Mix and are FREE ; new members are always enthusiastically welcomed into the fold; no auditions are necessary just curiosity, musicality and a willingness to explore with like-minded young people.
